Search Engine Optimization for your blog from the head of Googles Webspam team

By admin • August 15th, 2007

Google’s Matt Cutts is well known in the Search Engine Marketing world as his personal blog sometimes gives clues on how to maximize your blog/website’s marketing to get the best results in Google.

At his WordCamp 2007 talk he gave a presentation titled "Whitehat SEO Tips for Bloggers" in which through the usage of a powerpoint presentation he identified certain areas where bloggers can try and improve their SEO by applying these simple rules. This is the opposite of Blackhat SEO tips which should be avoided at all costs (such as Keyword Stuffing)

Although a collection of bullet points which accompanied his talk, the presentation shows that there are many things out there which can help you monitor your blog as well monitor SEO, he calls them
"free Google Tools". – utlizing Google Analytics as well as facilities such as FeedBurner. (Now owned by Google) amongst a whole host of things. However, it must be noted with caution that the usage of free Google tools will not gain a webmaster SEO.

Search Engine Optimization is a changing industry all the time. One strategy however has been consistently the same; good, fresh, focused & relevant content is what search engines are looking for. After all, Search engines are in the business to provide the consumer (searcher) the right answer to their question. Similarly it should be noted that direct duplication of content – i.e. copying and pasting articles or websites do NOT count as fresh content and they can harm you in Google and other search engines.

In terms of letting the search engines know that your site has been updated with fresh content a Blog is really the best way for this to occur as a blog will ‘ping’ search engines to let them know to come and index the blog as it has fresh content. The method of pinging is in most cases automatic although it can be achieved manually through pinging websites such www.pingomatic.com.
